Frequently Asked Questions

How would I get the most from my UMMG physician visit?

If you see other doctors between visits to UMMG, be sure to bring any information with you, specifically, any medications, treatments prescribed, or test results. Bring a list of any symptoms or problems you are having. It  is best to share this list with your doctor at the beginning of the visit. Bring a list of questions. Be sure to go over the entire list with your doctor.

How do I find the right primary care physician?

  • The key to good health is finding the right doctor for you and your family.
  • Begin looking for a primary care physician before you get sick.
  • Don’t be rushed into choosing someone when you are too sick to make the best decision for yourself and your family.

What should I look for before choosing a primary care physician?

  • Choose a physician whose office hours meet your requirements.
  • Ask about the doctor’s policies regarding appointments and emergencies.
  • Find out about the doctor’s specialties.  Primary care physicians can have special interests.  Certain doctors may emphasize treating sports injuries or diseases like diabetes or high-blood pressure.
  • If possible, meet with the doctor before selecting your primary physician.

How do I make the most of my medical appointments?

  • Be prepared: If you have questions that you want to have answered by your physician, write them down before your appointment.  Keep a record of all of your immunizations, medications, test dates and results.
  • Always be honest with your physician:  Be sure to tell your physician if you are not feeling well.  Do not be embarrassed to discuss problems with your doctor.  Everything you say is confidential.
  • Be aware:  Your primary care physician will monitor your health and recommend appropriate preventive measures, but ultimately you are responsible for your well-being.  Make sure to schedule regular checkups and be aware of your family medical history as well as risk factors for common illnesses, such as heart disease.

How do I obtain a second opinion?

Obtaining a second opinion from a physician can be a critical step in making informed health care decisions. Here is a list of the most important reasons to seek the opinion of another doctor.

  1. Your questions were not answered.
  2. A rare disease has been diagnosed.
  3. A major surgery has been recommended.
  4. A serious illness or condition has been diagnosed.
  5. The recommended treatment has serious potential risks or side effects the diagnosis is difficult and warrants an additional medical opinion to confirm the findings.
  6. The recommended treatment is excessively expensive.
  7. A course of treatment has not been effective.
  8. You feel uncomfortable about the physician's skills and his/her areas of expertise.

Getting a second opinion usually results in the second physician affirming what the first physician initially recommended. However, it can be worthwhile to gain this reassurance and confidence in  your care. In other situations, the second physician’s opinion differs from that of the first physician. In this case, you will be better equipped to make an informed decision about the course of your treatment.
